Can permanent hearing loss be 'cured by medication?

The short answer to the above question is not yet. However, research is moving us in that direction and hearing loss that was once thought permanent may be reversible one day.

For example recent research from USC and Harvard has led to the development of a drug that can be delivered to the inner ear and stay there. According to the researchers, previously tested drugs often dissolved in the fluid of the inner ear, reducing or nullifying their effectiveness. The first step is creating a drug that stays put in the middle ear so that it can do what it needs to do. That is exactly what these researchers have done.

Now this was only tested on tissue in a petri dish. Many more studies are waiting to be done on live subjects, so a marketable drug is still years away. For now, a hearing aid tailored to your specific needs is the best treatment for permanent hearing loss.
