Types of hearing loss: Mixed

Previously we have discussed sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both types of hearing loss. For example one may have a sensorineural hearing loss due to noise exposure, and further hearing loss on top of that due to wax, fluid, infection, or other conditions that block sound from getting to the inner ear.

Often a combination of treatment methods are required for mixed hearing loss. The conductive portion of the hearing loss can often be treated medically. Once this is cleared up the sensorineural portion can be dealt with. Treatment for this will usually involve the use of hearing devices to improve hearing.

If you have a longstanding sensorineural hearing loss that gets worse over a short period of time you may have a conductive component, resulting in a mixed hearing loss. Of course it is hard to know for sure without a hearing evaluation. If you do notice your hearing decrease, for any reason, you should book an evaluation as soon as possible to determine the cause and treatment options.
