We know we should have our hearing tested if we have symptoms of hearing loss, such as difficulty hearing conversations, asking people to repeat themselves, or turning up the TV too loud. But, what if you don’t experience any of these symptoms?

Hearing often decreases very gradually. So gradually that you may not notice the early stages of hearing loss ( although others around you may ). For this reason it is important to have your hearing checked periodically in order to catch hearing loss early. Untreated hearing loss can lead to social isolation, anxiety, fatigue, and increased risk of dementia.

So, when should you start monitoring your hearing? It’s generally recommended that you have a baseline assessment around age 50 and then, just like your eyes, have your hearing checked every few years. If you work around noise you should have a baseline earlier, preferably when you start work. Your hearing should also be monitored yearly as long as you’re working in noisy environments.
