Tips for adjusting to your hearing aids

So, you have just been fit with your hearing aids. Adapting to hearing new sounds can be a bit overwhelming at first. So, here are some tips to help you adjust to your new devices.

Wear your hearing aids consistently. Your ears and brain need time to adapt to new sounds. The only way this can happen is if they are exposed to these sounds on a regular basis. For the first few weeks it is normal for things to seem a little too loud or too sharp. This is because you’re not used to hearing sounds at this new level. After awhile of consistent use things will start to sound more natural.

Start off slow. For the first few days wear your hearing aids at home, even when it is completely quiet. Gradually start using your hearing aids in more challenging situations. This will help your ears and brain adapt without being too stimulated all at once.

Take breaks if you need to. You’re going to be hearing a lot of new sounds. If you get tired or feel overwhelmed, take your hearing aids out for a little while. After a few days to weeks you should be able to wear them all day without breaks. Have patience and remember to put them in for at least a few hours each day until you work up to that point.

Have realistic expectations. Hearing aids won’t restore your hearing to normal, but they will greatly improve your quality of life by making listening easier and more enjoyable again.
